First Church, the Lateran and Early Christianity A visit to St. John Lateran Basilica and its surrounding area is essential to understand the origins and rise of the Church from the time of Constantine the Great to the late medieval period. Founded and built by Constantine after his legendary dream of the Cross as a sign of victory, San Giovanni (St. John) remained the seat of Christian officialdom until shortly before the construction of the new St. Peter's Basilica in the 15th century. In this comprehensive, three-hour Christian Rome tour, led by a scholar of early Christian history, we'll visit the most important parts of the complex and discuss some of the key themes and ideas from the study of this period of history.
You’ll have your last afternoon in Roma free to pick up those last-minute souvenirs, throw your coin in the Trevi Fountain, or simply wander at will.
